How to Buy a Handgun in North Carolina

The North Carolina Handgun Purchase Permit system has been lifted. This long-awaited legislation has lifted this age-old law and now North Carolina residents no longer have to obtain a handgun purchase permit from their county sheriff. 

What does this mean?
Though this bill does remove the requirement to obtain a handgun purchase permit, you are still required to undergo a background check for all firearms transactions in our store. All background checks are run through the FBI NICS Instant Background Check System. Though these checks usually come back in a matter of minutes, in some cases there also may be a five-day delay due to backlogs in the FBI’s processes.

What if I have a North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit?
As in year’s past, we are still able to accept your North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit in lieu of the additional background check. Please note, that ONLY a North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit can be used for this purpose.

What if I’m not an NC resident?
Federal law requires that all handguns be transferred the buyer within their state of residence. So, for example, if a South Carolina resident wishes to purchase a handgun from us, we will need to ship it to a gun dealer in South Carolina. This is something we do every day, and we are prepared to help you find an FFL and ship your handgun for final transfer.
